 Our History

As Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada began planning their 50th Anniversary as a National Historic Site in 1988, a group of volunteers assisted staff with the event.

The Fort Malden Volunteer Association was formed in August, 1989 by a group of local heritage supporters, who were concerned that adequate funds be available to sponsor special programs and park projects.

In February 1991, the F.M.V.A., which had firmly established itself, became a registered charitable organization and a set of objectives were established.

In August 2009 the F.M.V.A. officially became known as the Friends of Fort Malden. The name change better reflects our role as a cooperating organization working in conjunction with Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada.

 Objectives

The objectives for which the Friends of Fort Malden is incorporated are:

  • to preserve the unique historical heritage of Fort Malden National Historic Site by sponsoring programs and events that will increase public awareness of the site and of the Amherstburg area primarily as it relates to the military period.
  • to foster interest and pride in Canadian history.
  • to establish, operate, maintain, equip and direct a historical reenactment unit based primarily at Fort Malden National Historic Site as a historical and tourist attraction.
  • to conduct and promote historical and archaeological research with a view that the findings of such research would pass into the store of educational material for the benefit of the public.

  • sponsorship of special activities such as educational programs for school groups.
  • operation of The Garrison Gift Shop (we sell historical toys, military and historical books, t-shirts, and many more unique gift ideas)
